Is band a year-long class? Yes.
What band class should I register for? If you have never played an instrument before, sign up for Beginning Band. If you have already played a band instrument sign up for Auditioned Band (see more information in Auditions--Brass and Woodwind Auditions). If you are auditioning for Percussion sign up for the music class you would like to do if you do not make it into the percussion class. If you would like to take more than one music class please let me know and I will work with the counselors to get your schedule set up correctly.
Where do I rent an instrument? You can rent an instrument from Summerhays Music.
What brand of instrument should I get? I recommend Yamaha instruments for their consistency, durability, and performance.
Can I buy an instrument online? Unfortunately, the $100 instruments found on Amazon perform extremely poorly and often break past the point of repair. I do not recommend buying an instrument for so cheap. You can sometimes find used instruments on KSL Classifieds that are a good deal and work well, but make sure that you have them checked out by an instrument repairman at a music store first. Summerhays Music also has cheaper used options available.
Are there school instruments available? Instruments are available for students who play bigger instruments like tuba, euphonium, bass clarinet, or bassoon. There are also a very limited number of other instruments available for students on fee waiver or who truly cannot afford to rent from a music store.
What book do I need? Students in all classes will use the Essential Elements, Book 1. The school has copies of the book for those who need them.
What strength of reed to I need for my clarinet or saxophone? Students in Concert Band and Symphonic Band should start the year on a strength 2.5 reed. As these students progress, they will be asked to move to a strength 3.0 reed. Students in Wind Symphony should start the year on strength 3.0 reeds.
What if I want to switch to a new instrument? Find more information under Auditions--Instrument Switching.
